10 common skincare mistakes
NOT WEARING SPF EVERYDAY
You should be wearing SPF every single day, even when it’s raining or snowing. The suns harmful rays can penetrate the clouds leaving your skin exposed on the most wintery days. Sun exposure causes sun spots, skin damage and can even lead to skin cancer. You should be wearing at least an SPF 30 daily and it should be a stand alone product (not combined in a foundation etc).
NOT GETTING ENOUGH SLEEP
Getting a good night’s sleep will help your skin to look it’s best. The average person needs 7-9 hours of sleep a night and when your skin is getting less than it’s optimum rest, it’ll become dull and pale with under-eye circles. Sleep deprivation affects wound healing, collagen growth, skin hydration and skin texture. Inflammation is also higher in people who sleep less causing outbreaks of acne, eczema, psoriasis and skin allergies.
Exfoliating is an important step in any skincare routine as it helps to get rid of dead skin cells which makes way for healthier ones to take their place. Unfortunately, it could be doing more harm than good. It can cause tiny tears that can impair the skin’s normal barrier. If you are using a physical exfoliator you should use it no more than 3 times a week and should be gentle when using it. You can also try chemical exfoliators which will eliminate the harsh scrubs.
NOT CHANGING YOUR PILLOW CASES
Many people make the mistake of not washing their pillowcases enough, which can ultimately lead to acne. You should be changing your pillowcase every few days in order to avoid bacteria from breeding. We also recommend using a silk pillowcase which can help to reduce wrinkles, leave your skin softer and be better for your hair.
NOT DRINKING ENOUGH WATER
Did you know that drinking water is by far the most beneficial thing you can do for your skin? Women should be drinking 2 litres a day and men should be drinking 3 litres. Your skin will immediately perk up if you’re giving it enough water and maintaining healthy hydration levels. Water is the most inexpensive beauty product with the highest return on investment.
DONT FORGET YOUR NECK!
If your skincare routine stops at your jawline, you’re doing it wrong. Your neck needs some loving too. The skin of your neck is thin and will age easily and often faster than other parts of your body. Make sure you bring your moisturiser further down and massage it into your neck as well. You can buy products specifically for your neck but a standard hydrating moisturiser will work just as well.
SLEEPING IN YOUR MAKE UP
When you’re really tired, it’s tempting to skip taking your makeup off and climbing into bed instead. However, sleeping with your makeup on is actually one of the worst things you can do for your skin. Sleeping in makeup will age you 7 times faster than if you took your makeup off before bed. Try taking your makeup off when you get home or after you’ve eaten so that you’re not leaving it until the last minute when you’ll be more tempted to leave it on.
You may not even realize that you do it, but constantly picking at your face can cause irritation, inflammation and spread harmful bacteria. Doing this often will lead to scarring and further breakouts due to your hands not always being clean. Many people do this out of anxiety or habit, if that’s the case try and stop it by keeping your hands occupied with something else.
NOT CLEANING YOUR PHONE
Most people have their phones constantly in their hands and no matter how many times you wash your hands, your phone screen will still collect bacteria. When you make a call and put your phone to your face all those germs will transfer onto your face. To stop this from happening you should get into the habit of wiping down your phone everyday with an anti bacterial wipe.
USING THE SAME MOISTURISER DAY & NIGHT
It’s great that you’re moisturising day and night but your daily moisturiser might not be suitable for your night time routine. Some moisturisers have SPF built in which is perfect for during the day, but not so great for overnight. At night you’ll probably need a thicker/heavier cream so it’s important to invest in a separate moisturiser for the evenings.
