How to perfect your self-tan routine
STEP 1 – EXFOLIATE ✨
The first step you should be incorporating into your routine is exfoliating. This process will remove any dry or dead skin cells to leave you with fresh and radiant skin ready for false tan. This can be done with either a body scrub, usually made with salt or sugar to achieve it’s grainy texture or a dry brush.
STEP 2 – SHAVE 🍗
In order to get the most flawless tan, you should be shaving the day before you apply your tan. This was your skin will be nice and smooth and ready for application. If you shave on the day you tan then your pores will be open and this can result in brown dots on your legs where the tan has penetrated into your open pores.
STEP 3 – MOISTURISE 🥄
You should be moisturising your entire body every night but it’s crucial especially before you tan to apply moisturiser to dry areas such as your elbows, knees, knuckles, between the fingers, inner wrists, ankles and toes. This will ensure the tan doesn’t cling to these areas which are generally the tell tale signs of false tan.
STEP 4 – APPLY TAN ☀️
Applying your tan from the ankles up in sweeping motions will ensure the product is evenly distributed and this means that you’ll get a natural and even looking tan without any of the nasty streaks
STEP 5 – LAYER UP 🧥
After you’ve applied your first layer of tan, wait a few minutes and then you’ll be dry enough to start on your second layer. We recommend two layers for the body and one layer for the face. You should also use specific facial tanners to avoid the product clogging your pores which can then lead to breakouts.
STEP 6 – BUFFER 🖌️
To ensure you have the applied your tan correctly to all the right areas, you should use an old makeup brush and dab it on your mitt. Then apply over your stretched out hands and feet in a fast but gentle, circular motion. This will leave your hands and feet streak free, 2 of the easiest areas to spot tanning disasters. We also recommend wiping in between fingers, toes and over the nails with a damp cloth and then rubbing your wrists together to remove any obvious lines.
STEP 7 – UPKEEP 💫
In order to make sure your tan lasts as long as possible, we recommend using a gradual tanner throughout the week. This will keep your tan topped up and add a healthy glow. You should also avoid body/face products that contain strong ingredients such as retinol, AHA’s and strong exfoliators.
