OUR TOP skin essentials for men
Due to the difference in hormone levels, mens skin is generally thicker and tougher than women’s. This means that whatever products your girlfriend or mum uses probably won’t work for you. Men typically have more and larger hair follicles and produce more sebum meaning they can also experience increased breakouts. Other factors, such as spending more time outdoors and shaving can also affect mens skin.
The most important step for any skincare routine no matter what your gender, is cleansing. As your skin is exposed to dirt, bacteria and environmental impurities, cleansing will remove these to help prevent breakouts and clogged pores. This should be done morning and night and this step should take no longer than 30 seconds, so you have no excuse!
Men often suffer with ingrown facial hairs due to the nature of having to shave their faces frequently. In order to prevent this it is advised to exfoliate prior to shaving. As razor bumps are caused by trapped hair follicles under the skin, gently scrubbing away the dead cells with an exfoliator before you shave can help to minimise this. It is also recommended that you NEVER shave with a dull or blunt razor as this will cause unnecessary friction which then can result in rashes and redness and ALWAYS shave with the grain of your hair.
Moisturising will restore hydration to the face as well as replacing any lost moisture and nutrients through the previous steps. It will also act as a protective barrier which will help prevent dirt clogging the pores and protects against bacteria that is responsible for acne. Dependant upon your skin type will determine how much product to use. Oilier complexions will require less whereas dry skin types will need more.
Whether you work outside or not, you should be wearing SPF every single day. Harmful UVA & UVB rays can penetrate windows and glass meaning you’re not even safe in an office. Daily protection from the sun is the most effective way of reducing the signs of ageing and this step should be the last of every skincare routine.
Clay masks are also ideal for men as they will help to draw out any impurities under the skin and clean pores. As men are on average more exposed to dirt from working outside, it’s important to try and extract them from within. Acne-prone skin will also benefit from the regular use of clay masks and as men produce more sebum, they will be twice as effective.
So basically, there really is no time like the present to invest in a decent skincare regime that will keep you men looking younger, healthier and happier.
