Microdermabrasion is a cosmetic procedure that uses fine crystals and a vacuum to remove dead skin cells on the face.

The aim is to reduce the effect of fine lines and minor skin blemishes.

It works on all skin types and shouldn’t cause any skin colour changes or scarring.

Limitations: It’s not effective for scars, stretch marks, deep wrinkles or acne scars.

Derma peels

Derma peels are liquids brushed on to the face to remove dead skin cells and stimulate the growth of new cells.

The aim of this cosmetic procedure is to improve the appearance of the facial skin – for example, by reducing age spots and evening out skin tone.

There are three types of peel: superficial, medium and deep. See What it involves for more information.

Superficial and medium peels are usually safe, provided they’re administered correctly. Deeper peels are more risky.

Derma rolling

Derma rolling, or micro-needling, is a treatment whereby a device is rolled across the skin. It looks a little bit like a really small paint roller. This roller is covered in teeny tiny little needles that when rolled over the face and neck puncture the skin. These punctures do two things: 1) trick the skin into regeneration mode – because it thinks the skin has been injure. And 2) create little channels into your skin’s layers meaning that products are able to penetrate further down to where they’re needed, improving their efficacy.

When applied correctly, it stimulates the production of new skin and is said to be effective at combating acne scars, wrinkles and stretch marks.

Derma rolling has even been praised by celebs like Kim Kardashian, Gwyneth Paltrow and Jennifer Aniston. It should be carried out by a professional in a clean and sterile environment. These home devices – particularly ones which penetrate the skin as deep as 2.5mm – can lead to infection and damage to the skin and should be avoided. What’s more, you can’t be sure of the quality or cleanliness of a device purchased over the internet.
